Cardiovascular diseases
Protecting the heart and bloodstream
Cardiovascular diseases have become a severe problem in our society. In addition to the avoiding of risk factors, early diagnosis and therapy of cardiovascular diseases plays a significant role. Within its cardiology research, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals concentrates on innovative approaches for several heart diseases as well as anticoagulance.
Medical prevention and treatment of circulatory disorders
According to their metabolic function, circulatory disorders affect all organs and regions of the body. Blood clots in the vascular system that can cause an occlusion of the blood vessels are referred to as thromboses. Thromboses are a serious risk. If the blood clot (thrombus) detaches from the vessel, it can travel to the heart or lung and can, for example, cause a – sometimes fatal – lung embolism.
The research activities of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals include projects which help prevent the formation of unwanted clots and their consequences (thromboembolisms) or which dissolve clots which have already formed (peripheral arterial occlusion).
Innovative therapies for heart diseases with a high medical need
Heart failure, stable angina pectoris or artrial fibrillation – today, the most frequent coronary diseases cannot be treated sufficiently. Besides targeting the causes, treatment can be supported by medication. However, this treatment is often accompanied by unwanted side effects, such as arrythmias or severe blood pressure decrease. Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals works on the identification and development of novel treatment approaches with a balanced risk-benefit profile.
