From the idea to the contract
A global initiative improves access to reliable and effective contraception for 27 million women
More than 200 million women in developing countries have no access to modern contraceptives or other services supporting active family planning – even though they would like to use contraception. An agreement between Bayer HealthCare and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation signed in December will improve access to a safe and reversible form of long-term contraception: Jadelle. This implant, which was prequalified by the World Health Organization in 2009, offers women effective contraception for up to five years. The program expects to prevent almost 30 million unplanned pregnancies and to save $250 million in global healthcare costs during the term of the agreement between 2013 and 2018.
