Girls’ Day And Boys’ Day 2009

One Day Like A Real Scient

On 23. April, Girls’ Day took place at Bayer Schering Pharma in Berlin, Germany. This national day of action was especially founded to familiarize young girls with jobs from the domains of natural sciences and technology. It is designed to inspire them to get involved in topics that have until now been mostly dominated by men.

Girls’ Day And Boys’ Day

This year marks the seventh time that Girls’ Day has been carried out at Bayer Schering Pharma Berlin. The company was also one of the first to organize a suitable offer for “New ways for boys”, a new campaign that was held in parallel. “Our goal is to stimulate young people’s enthusiasm for technical and scientific vocations and give them ideas for their subsequent choice of career,” explains Dr. Hans-Joachim Raubach, head of the Berlin site.

The students immersed themselves in the daily routine of a scientist for one day. The teenagers, aged 12 to 16, were able to gain insight into the professions of chemical or biological laboratory assistants or pharmaceutical production assistants. In this process they had the valuable chance to take a look into the medical research division in one of the leading specialty pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Microscopes and Molecules

Several different stations gave an exciting insight into medical research at Bayer Schering Pharma. The students were not only meant to look and listen: the experts had prepared experiments so that the students could handle pipettes and forceps themselves.

In the Women’s Healthcare research laboratory, the young scientists were able to make their own tissue cuts to study under the microscope. In “Molecule Cinema”, the researchers had made molecular structures visible through computer-assisted models and were able to demonstrate how medication molecules attach themselves to the body’s own protein particles.

How are new drugs developed? Which duties do pharmaceutical production assistants or chemical or biological lab assistants have? What are the scientists of a pharmaceutical company working on? The young researchers were given answers to these and many more questions on their three-hour excursion through science.
