Sites worldwide

Like at our corporate headquarters, we also pursue the aim of improving energy efficiency and cutting CO2 emissions at our production and research sites worldwide.

The measures include making lighting more energy-efficient (low-energy light bulbs, presence detectors, time switches), purchasing natural-gas vehicles, improving energy management in production, and drawing up overall energy-saving plans for specific buildings covering ventilation, air conditioning, heat recovery and the production of cooling water.

The following are just a few examples of climate-protection projects at our sites.

Heating for the laboratory and office building at the Pharma Research Center, Wuppertal, will in future be supplied by a partially modernized combined heat and power station. As part of Bayer's climate-protection activities, and against the background of an upward long-term trend in energy prices, heat generation will be made more efficient by the use of a cogeneration plant. Instead of burning natural gas to generate heat, the gas is used to drive a motor that generates electricity via a generator. The waste heat from the engine is then used for heating. The simultaneous generation of heat and electricity will raise overall plant efficiency to about 90 percent. This will enable us to cut CO2 emissions by almost 5,000 tonnes a year, and the electricity generated will reduce the amount of power that has to be purchased.

At our Garbagnate site, a municipality in the province of Milan, we have heat-insulated a building with the result that its energy needs have remained almost constant for several years, despite considerable increases in production. Power consumption per unit of production has fallen by almost half. The picture is similar in the use of methane as a fuel in generating steam and heat.
