Malaria

About 880,000 people worldwide die of malaria every year, so that it is still the most dangerous tropical disease. The infection is triggered by single-celled organisms (plasmodia). They are transmitted by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito, which needs protein-rich mammalian blood for her eggs to develop. About 60 of the total of 400 species of Anopheles mosquito can transmit the malaria pathogen.

Bayer CropScience has developed a mosquito net which is many times more effective against the dangerous mosquito bite than traditional nets – because it is impregnated with a special insecticide.

The company's cooperation partners include development organizations such as the United States Agency for International Development.
