Differentiated pricing
For example, we offer people in developing countries products at cost price. People in emerging countries, which are economically better off, can buy our drugs at special, reduced prices. In the industrial countries, we run patient-aid programs to supply necessary drugs to patients who are not covered by health insurance or cannot afford treatment.
As a first step, Bayer signed a contract with the US development organisation USAID (United States Agency for International Development) on 30th September 2009, about creating a so-called second-tiered market for contraceptives in selected African countries. This will allow women, particularly those with medium income, to buy oral contraceptives at reduced prices compared with the private market prices.
As the first project of its kind world-wide, USAID and Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals will start with the contraceptive Microgynon Fe in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. Nigeria, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Senegal, Benin, Togo and Malawi will follow. Bayer will supply the medications and its expertise, while USAID will focus on social marketing in the region.
