Counterfeit drugs

Many countries can be rightly proud of the safety and quality of their drug-supply systems. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in industrialized countries less than one percent of drugs sold are counterfeit. The situation in developing countries is different, however, because controls are often either lacking or inadequate: the WHO says over 30 percent of the drugs sold there are forgeries.

Counterfeit drugs have become a serious problem over the last few years. They jeopardize the health and lives of unsuspecting patients, since their composition and origin are unclear. Unfortunately, it is not possible at present to quantify exactly how many forgeries are in circulation in which markets.

We want to protect our patients from counterfeit drugs and prevent the reputation of our company and our products from being damaged by them. In the fight against counterfeit drugs we educate people about the problems of forgeries. We collaborate closely in this context with the responsible authorities, as well as with various institutions and associations.

We have launched a campaign called "Beware of Counterfeits" to make a wider audience aware of the issue. At the same time we are making our contribution to combating the problem by intensifying product security, employing internal and external investigators, and taking legal action.

Beware of Counterfeits – our commitment

The biggest risk that patients might be tricked into buying counterfeit products lurks in the Internet. Consumers need to be well-informed to avoid falling victim to these risks. This is why are involved in patient protection.

International cooperation against counterfeiting

In order to effectively combat counterfeiters, cooperation is needed between the industry, its associations and government organizations. We therefore cooperate with the responsible authorities worldwide and actively support the WHO's activities in the International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce (IMPACT), as well as the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA).

Bayer HealthCare is also a member of the Pharmaceutical Security Institute, the German Action Group Against Product and Brand Piracy ("Aktionskreis Produkt- und Markenpiraterie"), and the European Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines (EAASM). This latter grouping was founded in 2007 to draw attention to the shortcomings of current legislation and champions better patient protection in Europe.
